The Damnwells’ Alex Dezen tells BlastEcho about his favorite song you’ve never heard:
“Breath (Don’t Let’s Talk About Tomorrow)” by Pere Ubu
Pere Ubu has been one of the most uncompromisingly experimental American bands of the last few decades. But at one magical moment in the late ’80s, they were right in step with the whimsical and quirky pop aesthetic of XTC, Talking Heads, and Devo. I love this song. The seemingly nonsensical, vaguely-romantic lyrics; the Sgt. Pepper’s, labyrinthine arrangement, the hooky guitar phrase, and the bizarre key change all make for some pretty exquisite pop when mixed together in the cauldron of frontman David Thomas’ brain.
