On July 22, blues/soul singer/songwriter Matt Brown will release Walk Into the Light, his first-ever full-length album. Here now is an exclusive track from that album, “Fixed on You,” along with some words from Brown about the song’s fruition:

What inspired “Fixed on You?”

Long lasting and healthy relationships seem to be much more rare these days. I’ve been guilty of holding on to that “young blood” for too long and living by emotion rather than choice.  At 31, I’m starting to see that you have to make a decision to leave those wandering eyes behind and make a ‘yes’ decision to the person you want to be with if you want a shot at making it. This song is about coming to the realization of what it means to be committed and being okay with that.

How did the song develop?

The song started out as a slow ballad, but that made it come off a little too serious and sad sounding. I changed the vibe of the song to make it more fun because it is a celebratory song. The melody came first, and that paved the way for the toe-tapping rhythm.

How was the recording process for that track?

I was originally going to sing the chorus in my falsetto/head voice. My producer, Andy Hunt, and I decided to change from my head voice to my chest. It’s a song where I really have to belt the chorus, but I think it’s a push in the right way. After all, there is a sense of revelation in the lyric and the meaning of the song.

How do you feel about the final version?

I think the final version came out better than what I had imagined. It’s got all the right pieces and does a lot in two-minutes-and-fifty-three seconds. I think it’s easy to listen and digest as it should be. The horns were arranged and performed by Jon-Paul Frappier. They added a lot to the song.

Have you played the song live yet?

I played the song solo at an outdoor party and had people dancing with just me and the guitar. I can’t wait to perform this song live with the whole band. It’s going to be a party for sure! I’ll be performing it for the first time with the entire band in Nashville at a show on August 6.
