Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz Call Reunion Rumors “False”

The former Heads guitarist and drummer refute a Mediamass report of a reformation

Before rumors of an impending Talking Heads reunion gather too much steam, guitarist Jerry Harrison and drummer Chris Frantz are quick to put them to bed.

Reached by email, Harrison said, simply, “the rumor is false” when probed about a Mediamass report that the band has recorded as many as eight songs and is planning a 2017 world tour. Harrison provided no other comment to BlastEcho. Later, Frantz added via text, “I wish it were true. It should be happening but [frontman] David [Byrne] is holding out.”

The Talking Heads are one of only a few powerhouse bands who’ve disbanded and stayed that way. In the past all members of the band, but Byrne, have been receptive to a reunion; Byrne, however, prefers to concentrate on his solo career, telling a U.K. paper seven years ago “I’m not keen [on a reunion] and it’s unlikely to happen. I don’t need the money badly enough.”

The band hasn’t played as a unit since a three-song set at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2002. They officially disbanded in 1991.

Thank god it’s rumor. It doesn’t need to happen. They were an amazing team and produced a discography I consider perfect: every album a different style, and done well. You can’t improve upon the legacy, you can only ruin it by hauling it out of storage and putting it on display, with overweight band members looking a little ragged and a singer that can’t quite hit the same notes any more. Move on.

My friends and I went to a lot of Talking Heads shows back in the day. I’d love to have the opportunity to take my 13-year old twins to see them. I’ve played my kids their music since they were infants.

Too bad… But I’d be totally pumped for the three peep Heads reunion–with the ‘requisite’ band name change. “No Talking, Just Head” is one great album. I had always hoped Jerry, Tina, & Chris would get together every several years to make a new album. Alas, the damage I’ve done…

TDD is right. You who “need” this won’t be getting peak TH, but rather the version TDD lays out.

get the enhanced version of Demme’s “Stop Making Sense”, crank up the surround sound, and rock your ass off

Oh please this iconic band could make my life with a three song set that I had to sit in the last row for. I don’t care how old they are or how diminished their skills. Stop Making Sense was the sound track for the greatest, happiest time of my life and I’m grateful.
